[SKETCHBOOK] Spade

Saturday, February 3rd, 2007

It’s been a while since I’ve drawn Spade. He’s probably one of the more mysterious characters of Rapid City and one of my favorites to draw. So here’s a new one.

Enjoy.

Been sick the past week or so. So I’ve been doing some some sketching to get back into things.

Here’s one of the werewolves.

Enjoy.

Up from the drawing board

Monday, June 19th, 2006

Officer HowardWell, I’ve been trying to crank out as much art as possible so I haven’t had much time to post. But, I’m so excited about what I’ve been learning lately that I thought I’d take a moment to share some of my work with everyone.

I’ve really started tightening up my pencils which make for tighter inks. I think that the cropped image from my most recent character image demonstrates that.

Also, I’ve been having fun with cameos — little tributes to friends who have been supportive of us. In this image, I present artist Jason Howard (a bit beefed up) toting away a baddy. Jason talked with me at the Motor City Con about some artistic techniques that he uses and they shifted my approach considerably. My figures now are more gestural and iconic while my details (especially mechanical details) come from stronger reference. Thanks Jason!

Well, back to the drawing board. I’ll try to post again real soon!

Love,

Micah

Hector revision sheet

[*Click image to view larger version.]

From left to right. Here’s some development on a character we are calling “Hector”.

I love the unique mask and collar thing, but something about those, along with his vest, made his proportions look wierd. I thought he looked sort of like a little kid.

Jason added the shoulder armor, beefed up the glove, and made the vest more functional looking. This solved the proportion thing.

When I was looking through the photo reference that Jason sent me, I noticed that one of the vests had these cool leg-straps. It occurred to me that if this guy is going to be mixing it up with super heroes and villains, then an unsecured vest could get yanked right off. So, we added the straps between the legs.
Pads, straps, clips, finished details, and Hector is basically done.

Viper.

In essence, Viper’s story is a Bildungsroman so we will see him progress through a number of developmental stages in his life as a superhero. To emphasize this, he will wear a number of costumes throughout the series. This is one of them. Jason and I are still going back and forth on designs, but we’ve settled on a couple.

Love,

Micah

Rapid City: Switchman & Switchboard sketches Redux

Wednesday, March 8th, 2006

Some minor and major changes to looks of the Switchman (& Switchboard). With the Golden Age one, we have more of a worker who left his job to join the fight. Less of a super-hero feel to his outfit. With the Silver Age Switchman I changed the bandanna into a mask and cleaned the rest of him up a bit. And lastly, we have a slightly revised Switchboard, like her Grandfather, with a little less of a super-hero feel to her.

Enjoy.

Rapid City: 'Golden Age' Switchman sketch (designs b2)

Tuesday, March 7th, 2006

Here’s another attempt at the Golden Age Switchman. I’m happy with how it turned out, but still needs some work, needs to be less “super-hero”… back to the drawing table…
