Rapid City: Red Lion (Outfit Design b1)

I have my Red Lion concept, and Jason has HIS Red Lion concept, but we need to pin down what he’s going to look like.  I think that a bit of both will be best.  I think that Jason’s pants are about right (I will not try to defend the sweats on my sketch), but neither of us have the head right yet.  We need to both study lion heads.  It needs to be massive, muscular, and furry.  Also, I am worried about the color scale of the character.  Red can all too easily become pink (which we don’t want) or sunbursty (which may be okay at times, but is also kind of ‘hippy’ looking).  I’m working on an oil study of the character to get this pinned down.

In the meantime, I think we should look at what we have so far and build sketches out of those:

My Splash on the Blog

Well, Josh was naggin’ so I got to loadin’ up some of my sketches.  This is the Rapid City splash that I came up with because I finally got a new sketchbook (after some three years–glad as hell to be drawing again!).  I always start a new sketchbook with a little intro splashpage.  Not sure why, but it makes it feel official or something. 

 Anyway, this piece makes me pretty proud because the three of us hashed out these characters like crazy over the last few weeks or so and finally, I think, have them designed.
