Back in early May we were contacted by Kim Kachadoorian of Adair Printing. She was letting us know that she entered our Rapid City: B-Sides in the Detroit Craftsman Club contest. She went on to inform us that it won a Gold Printing Award!

Every year the “craftsman club” (aka printers) has a contest where printers send in some of their best work over the last year. I really liked the comic book from day one and put it aside for the contest. I thought the design was great, the black and white images were very detailed and skillfully drawn. So I entered it into the contest. These printers are what I call “old school” at least most of them. This book really stood out on the table as something different than printing for packaging or calendars or other types of books. It was entered into the digital saddle stitched entry level.

As you can imagine we are quite excited here, because Adair helped us produce an amazing looking book and we are very happy that they won something for the hard work they did.

Well we did our little 24 Hour Comic Day project (see last post) this past Sunday. Needless to say it was quite a learning experience. It showed our strengths and our weaknesses. I think best of all we had a great time doing it. It was a lot of fun. And a huge thanks to those that took the time to come hang out with us while we did it “live”. It definitely gave us renewed inspiration to get Rapid City done. It also got us talking about doing something similar to the 24HCD on regular basis (monthly or bi-monthly), but for a shorter period of time. Something where we can interact with others while we work. We’ll have more on that soon. Thanks again, and we’ll be in touch shortly here.

Something we are also doing a little different is all three of us will be working on the project instead of individually doing our own. And…we’ll be doing it live. So come check us out from Midnight Saturday to Midnight Sunday (or is that really Midnight Sunday to Midnight Monday???). Any ways, it’s going on NOW!

So come join us at some point of this 24 hour insanity.

Well unfortunately things have slowed down a bit for us here. With Micah finishing up his schooling the end of last year into the first half of this year, me having to take on some extra freelance work to help out financially at home and with the wedding coming up here real quick, our production has suffered. Not by choice, trust me on that. So we just wanted to let you know we are still working on bringing this “labor of love” to the masses, just taking a little longer than we wanted it to. So we apologize to everyone for the delay. Do expect to see it released this year though, just towards the later part of this year is all.

Also for those that were paying attention today, it was Free Comic Book Day at your local favorite comic store. One of the books I was most eagerly awaiting was “THE ASTOUNDING WOLF-MAN” from Image. See this book was co-created (with Robert Kirkman of Walking Dead and Invicible fame) and all the art done by a friend of mine, Jason Howard. Anyone who doesn’t know Jason should know that he is a hard working guy and totally deserves this “big break”. I have known Jason for close to ten years now and he’s a really great guy. So anyone who didn’t pick up his book today, make sure you ask your local shop if they have any extra copies you could maybe buy, cause this is going to be a good series to get into.

Ok so a lot has changed over the past 3 months since Wizard World Chicago. We had planned (still do) to do an introductory book to the Rapid City series, but recently decided to put it on the back burner. What we have decided to do is just focus on getting the series started and in your hands. Don’t worry we still plan to give the discount to those who were gracious enough to buy one of our “Teaser Ashcans”, more details on that to come.

And so it begins…

Jason is an incredible artist and I’ve had the pleasure of watching him grow better at what he does. I’ve known him for quite a few years now and he’s just gotten better by “leaps and bounds”. He’s a really nice guy too, so if you ever get the chance to talk to him, do so. He always has much to say and share with others.

Well as Jason himself says, “[If] you’re bored, or just looking for another way to waste some time when you should be working, here you go.”

Check it out and enjoy.

While I was there, I attended Western Michigan University.

For a short time, I drew a weekly comic strip called “Josho Adventures” for the Western Herald. It was poorly drawn, and mainly featured lame inside jokes and references. Some people liked it, and the amazingly talented Paul Sizer once described it using the word “intelligent”.

Anyway, last week, the Herald ran a column about us and our comic book. It was pretty cool, but they got the web address wrong.

They were cool enough, however, to run a correction. So, welcome to all of my K-zoo homies who heard about us through the Herald and are checking us out for the first time.

Please, enjoy. And if you happen by The Rocketstar, tell Evil Bill that I said “hi”.

Well we’re upon the eve of our trek to the “Windy City” for the “Wizard World Chicago” convention. I’m quite excited to get to Chicago again. It’s one of my favorite places to visit (San Diego being number one). So we’ll be heading out in the morning and should be there early afternoon. Most likely won’t be at the show for the “Premiere Night” on thursday, but will definitely be there the rest of the weekend. I’m really pumped up to be at this show. It’s been 8 years I think since the last time I went. Should be a lot of fun. So stop by our table (#3250 B) in Artist Alley to talk with Micah or I and pick up a “Con Sketch Edition” of the Teaser Ashcan and get a sketch done by either one of us.

Hope to see you there!

Kalamazoo is a really great town, exactly half-way between Detroit and Chicago. It seems to have a very special allure for those who have spent time there. If you pay close attention to Rapid City, you will see my own theory as to just what that allure is.

Bryan Charles, one of my K-town homies and a brillinat writer, just published his first novel. It is called “Grab Onto Me Tightly As If I Knew The Way“, and it is just fantastic. Go read a review for the details, or just trust me that it is incredible.

There are several Kalamazoos. Readers of super-hero comic books should be familiar with this kind of thing.

There is the real one. The one that is actually on the ground in Michigan. Then there is the romanicized, slightly fictional, one that exists in memory. Then there is the one that Bryan has written about, where the street names of the streets and the places are the same, and the people and events are just one or two details removed from the actual.

Then, a few steps down the ladder, is Rapid City. My very fictional version of Kalamazoo.

It is really cool for me to see the differences and similarities all of these versions.

And this is the part that I thought was really cool. One of the big revealing moments in his book is a confrontation with a certain character at a rock club in downtown Kalamazoo. The big climax of issue one of Rapid City is based on a confrontation that I had in a rock club in downtown Kalamazoo. It’s the same club. And, I suspect, that antagonists in each version are based on the same person.

Wierd how things work.

And, congratulations Bryan
