Cruisin'

If you know any of us MONOLITH folks, or have been reading any of our various blogs, then you have some idea how much we were putting into getting ready for the New York Comic Con.

Well, it’s done now. That book is done and all the set-up, prep, marketing, and sales are all done. I had a week off of work immediately following, and I really needed it.

So now it is back to work at my day job, and back to work on our comics. But now, with so much of that stress lifted, it feels like we are just cruising.

There is this ad that I always hear on the right-wing AM radio that I listen to in the morning. It is an ad for shipping by rail. Not a specific company, but just rail in general. I guess they had extra money in their budgets and decided to convince the average radio listener that rail is a really great way to move goods.

Money where our mouths are

We seem to spend all of our time reading, and writing, and thinking about superheroes.
Why? Because they do what they can to do what is right. Right? That is it. Isn’t it?

We are fascinated because they don’t just do the right thing, but they take obvious, and drastic, measures to say “now I am doing what is right”. Those costumes aren’t just disguises, they are statements of purpose and belief.

And we love them for it.

Meanwhile, in the real world, some piece of garbage decides he needs a little more money for whatever pieces of garbage need money for. He walks into a comic book store in Grand Rapids, MI, pulls a gun, robs the place, and then cements himself as a piece of garbage by shooting the guy at the register when the haul wasn’t big enough to satisfy him.

Comic book stores scrape by. They stay in business to give us the goods. And this guy got shot for it.

He’s alive, but in the hospital. Folks in the local comic shop community are pitching in to keep his shop open, but hospital bills are piling up.

He’s one of ours, comics fans. This is your chance. Step up and make a statement about what you believe is right.

From Rapid City to New York City

The con in New York this past weekend was amazing.

It was our first major con and we had our first full-sized comic for sale. This was a major milestone for MONOLITH, and it was a really great time. Here are some highlights, in the order that they pop into my head.

Walking through the doors onto the show floor. I actually whispered to Bekah “It’s the Big Show!”

Nearly giving in to booth-rage, but managing to set up a great looking booth anyway. Thanks mostly to Bekah.

Reps from other companies (that shall remain nameless) sniffing around on Friday morning.

Warming up the pitch on the thin trickle of crowds on Friday.

Meeting Matt Bowers face-to-face for the first time. Turns out: real cool guy!

Seeing people in costumes I recognized (leg-warmer era Kitty Pryde) and ones I did not recognize (medieval Jason Voorhies?).

All the comics fans pouring out into the streets of Manhattan after the show. That, combined with the colossal Iron Man posters created a very surreal environment where subculture seemed to be swallowing super-culture.

Selling a book to Orson Scott Card.

Selling lots an lots of books to lots and lots of people.

Meeting all of those people and talking with them about comics.

Tearing my poor voice to shreds talking to so many cool people.

Talking to podcasters about Rapid City.

Being there. Being around so many different people who are so excited about so many different comics. And, being able to get some of them excited about the comics that Im working on.

Getting off of the bus after a long ride home and finding my suitcase full of comics was much lighter than it had been on the outbound leg of the journey.

Sleeping late on Monday!

And, about a thousand other things.

Re-corking the Bottle

We are getting closer and closer to press time.

Slow, laborious, leaps and bounds.

And at every turn, everyone who is not currently the one slogging away is standing just behind that slogger with champagne bottles ready and little party horns in our mouths. And we’re looking at eachother like Dick Clark is counting down. All of our hard work and stress and humbling set-backs have all lead up to this one…

And then the word comes down from the desk!

10 more minutes.

1 more day.

Just a few more hours.

The champagne corks are suffering PTSD disorder from the constant on-duty, off-duty. From constantly being called up, primed and fluffed, and then bing sent back to the shelf with no indication of whether or not the next time would be the real deal, or just another drill. This constant near-elation is exhausting.
