[SNEAK PEEK] Shady characters.

Micah, Jason, and I are all hard at work on producing our preview book for the Motor City Comic Convention. You can see in the previous entry how Jason’s pencils are looking. Well, Micah has been trying to put together the panels that will form the frame narrative. Without revealing too much, it is a conversation between two characters.

This was an early version…..

It seemed to stiff. The body language just wasn’t affectionate enough. So Micah went back to work.

And came up with this……

Which became this…..

Stunning, but now TOO affectionate.

So he went back to the page. Keep in mind, this is all being done in the space of a few hours.

And then this image showed up in our discussion forum. There is just so much warmth and drama in this image I am going to feel clumsy and stupid gumming it up with a bunch of words.

I tell you, it is great just watching this process unfold. But being a part of it….I can’t even find the words. This is great.

Thanks for the kind words, Josh. This piece was a lot of fun to work on.

The fun part was playing with shadows. Since I was working with silhouettes, I needed to pin down the shape of what I was drawing. To do this, I began with fully outlined figure sketches. Once these were done, I had to lean back in my swivel chair and think: “What do these really look like in three dimensions?”

After a few moments, I would get a clear spacial image in my head. I would ‘hold’ it in front of me for a few moments and contemplate where the light sources would fall. In this case, on the big guy’s shoulders, the tops of his pecs, and bit on his paw and knee. She, on the other hand, would get even less light.

It’s a slow-going process, but one that really stretches the mind. I recommend similar exercises to any artist.

    Love,
    Micah
