Things to come

Monday, March 27th, 2006

Talking to Micah today about the preview book we are planning for Motor City Con. The idea is make a small book which we can sell at a low price, which give readers a taste for what the full book will be like.We are going to use some pages which will eventually (likely) be in Rapid City issue #2.

However, we don’t want people who buy the preview, and the issues to buy the same pages twice. There will be changes to the artwork, but the real difference will be the narration. The narration will tell the story that the action is not telling, and give new readers a taste of what the stories in Rapid City are going to be like.

All of this is basically funtional. We need a promo-book. It needs to have both an art and a story hook for readers. That is boring. If we had a marketing department, they could have come up with that.

The fun was what happened this afternoon while I was on the phone with Micah. In thinking of how exactly to present the narration, we came up with an idea that will do everything we need it to do and also be a really cool extra for those who are paying close attention.

Rapid City will be told largely as a series of flashbacks centered around a mystery in the frame narrative. With our preview book, we are stepping back even further.

In short, the very first Rapid City story that is available to the public, will be told in the form of a flashback from when the whole story is over.

I am a story-structure nerd, and I think that is really cool.

Giveaway Art.

Monday, March 20th, 2006

This is the full version of the drawing Ryan Hipp won in our first “Original Art Giveaway”.

This is actually a glimpse into the future of the Rapid City storyline. It features Red Lion and an older Sidekick standing off against some werewolves.

Enjoy.

Interview

This is totally cool.

I was recently interviewed by A.C. Hall at Stumblebum Studios. It’s great and I am very happy about it. Check it out.

For those of you who are reading this that just came over from that interview. Thank you very much for your interest. Welcome. Please take a look around, and let us know what you think.

Well I don’t want to ruin it for Ryan Hipp our winner of the “Original Art Giveaway”, but I wanted to share a “sneak-peak” of the drawing he won. Once he has it in hand I’ll post a full version of it. So anyway here’s a tease…

Hardest part so far…

Thursday, March 16th, 2006

Writing this comic is really fun. Working with my friends Micah and Jason is really fun. Even the business parts are a fun challenge, because they mean so much right now.

Taglines, however, are so hard to write that I am having trouble discussing them now without using foul language. As part of improving and updating this site, we have been trying to update the description you see when you visit the “Rapid City” page.

We have about 3 or 4 sentences to not only describe our book, but to make people want to read it. Unfortunately, if you are reading THIS, you are probably already interested, and thus are not much help to us.

Teaser tags like this have been written for every movie, comic, book, TV show, video game and whatever else for decades. And they are so compact an stylized that EVERYTHING has been made cheesy and cliche.

So, whatever you end up seeing over there, know that it was the product of lots of hard work, and strangely probing questions from Micah.

Oh, and thanks for being the ones who are interested despite the tag.

Kaahn.

Tuesday, March 14th, 2006

Recently I was shown some sketches done by a young aspiring artist (and animal lover from what I hear). The sketches were of snakes and snake heads and were done quite nicely too. So I decided to draw a sketch for this young artist as a thank you for showing me her work. I did notice I don’t draw “cutesy” (unless I’m sitting around drawing with my 5-year-old daughter). So I hope this aspiring artist doesn’t get too scared of… Kaahn! King of the Snake People!…I just made that up. I know it is silly, I’ll stop now…later.

Enjoy.
