The other day a verdict came in for trial of Jammie Thomas-Rasset. The RIAA claims she has violated copyright laws by downloading/uploading music on the file-sharing service, Kazaa. Okay, yeah, by the letter of the law, she violated it, but does the punishment fit the crime? I ask this because she was found guilty and ordered to pay $80,000 per song, for a total of $1.92 million! That is almost $2 MILLION DOLLARS for 24 songs! Those songs would not cost more than $24 if purchased on iTunes or eMusic. This is completely ridiculous.

I remember when I was younger, a friend of mine was caught stealing a CD from a Meijer store. They made him pay ten times the retail of it in order to not press charges. So he essentially paid $100 for a $10 CD (or something close to that). They said that in order to make up the cost of one stolen CD, they would have to sell ten more. Now, I'm not quite sure that exactly makes any sense, but the punishment certainly seems more fair, right? So why does this single mother of four(?) children have to pay $80,000 per $1 song then?

After the hearing Thomas-Rasset, 32, blasted: 'There's no way they're ever going to get that. You can't get blood out of a turnip.'

This is just another case in many (and sadly most likely many more to come) of the RIAA abusing its power and screwing more people over. They are a dying "breed" and they know it. They are just trying to get as much money as they can before it's truly over for them. But we as consumers need to stand up to them before it's too late, and tell them enough is enough. So as suggested elsewhere, every time you hear of a ridiculous verdict like this one, don't buy any new music for 6 months. Hit the RIAA where it counts, their bank accounts!
