I am currently focusing my writing on an OGN project that is outside the Rapid City universe, and Kav is still waiting for the published books to catch up to the ones that he has already drawn. So, to keep us active, and to remind readers that we are still here, I have asked Kav to start a series of pin-ups. And here’s how we do it.
-Josh
Kav had been doing some cheese-cake style pin-ups over at Champion City Comics, and I had the idea to do some cheesy shots of some RC characters, and the balance them out with some beef-calke shots of the dudes of Rapid City.
We looked at some classic pin-ups and talked about how we wanted to keep them “classy” and in character. Though, obviously, have some fun with them.
A little while later, this is what Kav sent me.
-Josh
Ok, Kav, this one is looking ok, but I think it needs a few adjustments. First off, if this is SwitchBoard, there is no way she is rocking a pony-tail. Short hair. Pixie cut. Or some other, stylish, thing that I don’t know about. Also, the flames on the edge of the shirt can cause some confusion, especially when the very next image is a woman with flame powers. And, I know i have been telling you to crop closer to the figures, but I think that this case will benefit from seeing her surroundings… if we are going with the sea of electronics like we discussed.
-Josh
I spaced out and drew flamethrower instead!
-kav
Hmmm. Not quite sure to make of this one just yet. I suppose that must be Flamethrower. The completely quilted costume seems odd. I would think strategically placed quilted sections to act as padding would make more sense, and actually look better for this kind of shot (no one looks good, or feels good, in a head-to-toe quilted outfit). Also, at the sketch stage, I can’t quite tell what is going on around her. Whatever it is, it does not look as tough at Flamethrower should look. Yes, do sexy, but make sure that it is also tough.
-Josh
It’s wreckage around her
-kav
Even with wreckage, she still looks very passive. She should look very tough.
-Josh
Ok, I guess Anne Marie’s pic just be cute. She is, after all, “the girlfriend”. We will just have to count on the readers to understand that this is just one picture and that she has way more depth and range in the book.
-Josh
everyone understands that one picture doesn’t equal a thousand words.
-kav
That’s true.
